Adam God Theory 1 (7 Jan 2007)

Adam God Theory  (January 7, 2007)

Van Hale:

Joseph Smith's views of Adam:
    1. He is our Father, the Grand Progenitor of the human family.
    2. Joseph never used "God" in reference to Adam, but his high station, as described Joseph, clearly justifies the view that Adam is the God of the human family.
    3. He was set by God the Father to be the head of the human family and to act under the authority of God's Son, Jesus Christ.
    4. Pertaining to this earth Adam is our partiarchal Father, but in the pre-existence, he was our brother, one of the many spirits organized by God our Father (the Father of Adam, Jesus and us) to come to this earth.
    5. Adam's God and Father is the Father of Jesus Christ.
Brigham Young's views of Adam:
  1. His views are clearly based on the views of Joseph Smith, but went beyond and differed with Joseph on several significant points.
  2. God, the Father of our spiritis and the Father of the spirit of Jesus Christ through literal procreation, came to this earth where he has been known as Adam.
  3. He began physical procreation resulting in the physical bodies for his spirit children.
  4. Adam is our Father in every sense, not our brother.
  5. Further, he is the literal Father of both the spirit and physical body of Jesus Christ, our brother.
Joseph's and Brigham's views differed on several points:
  1. Joseph did not teach that our spirits began through a literal spirit birth, but rather have always existed. In Brigham's view spirits begin at spirit birth and will, if they do not follow the plan of salvation, end with the dissolution of their being and cease to exist.
  2. In Brigham's view Jesus' spirit began by birth to Adam who had gone through mortality on a former earth and had become a God. In Joseph's view Jesus' spirit always existed and was aware of the mortal life of him who would attain his exaltation become Jesus' Father and God.
  3. In Joseph's view, as found in a number of sources, from 1829 up to a few weeks before his death, there is a distinction between our God the Father and Adam. To Joseph God the Father is not Adam, but rather Adam's Father and God and our Father and God.
  4. Joseph's chain of patriarchal authority was: God > Jesus Christ, His Son > Adam > Noah > etc.
  5. Brigham's chain of patriarchal authority was: God, our Grandfather > Adam, our Father > Jesus Christ, his Son > Noah > etc.

Callers:

  1. He believes Adam God as viewed by Brigham Young and that Joseph Smith held the sames views which can also be found in the Bible. I gave reasons for disagreeing.
  2. Art Bulla: he knows Brigham's Adam God view is correct because he received a revelation, which he read. He asserted that a person (certainly referring to me) who observes differing views among the prophets is the anti-Christ. He referred to Eliza Snow, Heber C. Kimball, Wilford Woodruff and Brigham Young as claiming that Joseph Smith taught all of Brigham's Adam God views.
  3. The streaming audio failed for a few minutes which ended the recording and the last several callers were not recorded.
The topic will be continued on January 14.
