Invesitgation of the Rocky Mountain Prophecy Program Synopsis December 24, 2006

I examined the common belief that the famous Rocky Mountain prophecy is found recorded in the diary of Joseph Smith. This is an exercise in historical investigation of documents and situations in pursuit of an accurate view of history. The following points were discussed.

1. The text is not in Joseph's diary.

2. What is the Manuscript History?

3. How and when was the prophecy written into the Manuscript History?

4. What were Joseph's views on Church expansion?

5. What was Joseph's view of Zion in 1844?

6. He intended for Church headquarters to remain in Nauvoo.

7. Discussion of the original reports of Joseph's April 8, 1844 discourse and an important flaw in the printed version.

8. How valuable are late reminiscences?

9. Callers points included reminiscent accounts of the prophecy, doctrinal evolution, Joseph's prophecy on war (D&C 87).
